Gran Salon Mexico is an independent initiative that promotes and disseminates current Mexican illustration. Its flagship format is a Fair dedicated to contemporary Mexican illustration that is held annually in Mexico City, celebrating its first edition in 2014. In addition to this annual event and in parallel throughout the year, we are Gran Salon Agency, where we focus on growing and linking illustrators with different types of projects.
The seventh edition of Gran Salon Mexico, contemporary illustration fair, will take place from November 6 to 10 in a hybrid format. All activities and the sale of the illustration pieces will be available on our website, to which we will add the in-site experience at LOOT (Guanajuato 227, col. Roma), the same place that hosted us in 2019 and to which we return in support of the local community.
For the first time GSM will be national and international, reaching all the public who want to be part of this new experience. On one hand the shop will be open to the world; the same goes for our educational and recreational activities: this year everybody will be able to participate from any corner of the Republic or anywhere in the world.
Visits to the in-site experience will be made through appointments of a maximum of one hour with a capacity of 15 people per hour, booking at GSM’s website. The space will be open from 11am to 7pm with free entry, by appointment, and with all the necessary security measures where the use of a mask will be mandatory. Walk-in visitors will be subject to the hourly occupancy.
During the five days of the event, in addition to being able to visit the exhibition both online and offline and to purchase pieces, there will be workshops, meetings, talks and portfolio reviews (free activities, with prior registration). There will also be flash tattoos in different parts of the country, books and objects for sale.
The educational activities confirmed to date are: papercut workshop by Johanna Wilhelm, fanzine workshop by Manuel Bueno, several encounters of portfolio reviews coordinated together with Primal, knitting meeting with Madeja jaja, and talks to be confirmed. All these activities will be online, free of charge, and with prior registration at gran.salon. The opening of "seats" for all activities will be communicated on the fair's social media channels and through our mailing. These activities will be open to the world, taking into account that they will be in Spanish and some in English. Flyers for each activity will be added to the press kit later this month.
We are proudly adding 68 voces to our program, a series of animated short stories in each of the 68 indigenous languages that we have in Mexico and are in danger of extinction. This is an ongoing project, so we will share the short stories that exist so far.
To enhance the experience from the distance and accompany visitors as closely as possible, we developed an augmented reality app where users can test the pieces that interest them on their own walls to see how they would look. This app, free to download, available worldwide, and for all operating systems, will be available before the start of the fair.
